Love Letters from Jersey Concert Fundraiser
Jody Mullen performed her signature cabaret known as "Love Letters from Jersey." This delightful musical performance was paired with a wine tasting provided by Sparta's own White Deer Liquor Store allowing guests to simultaneously expand their palette and heighten their senses. Jody's musical homecoming debut in Sparta marked a special milestone for the Sparta Train Station as it celebrated being in operation for six months. A portion of the proceeds from this concert and wine tasting experience benefitted the Sparta Train Station. Sparta Train Station is a nonprofit organization preserved for the use and enjoyment of the community offering a rail museum and inspiring backdrops for creative training experiences.
In her show, "Love Letters from Jersey," Jody Mullen deviates from her opera background to tackle the works of Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Sarah Vaughan and Bruce Springsteen, among others.
Jody Mullen is a soprano from New Jersey … but not the kind who has turned to a life of crime (yet). With an “acclaimed soprano voice that lends itself to the well-known classics and popular show tunes known as the Great American Songbook” (The Sparta Independent), she has performed in some of the country’s most exciting venues … as well as a few shady ones! In April and May 2015, she debuted her solo show Love Letters from Jersey at Don’t Tell Mama, the legendary cabaret space in midtown Manhattan, directed by Lennie Watts, with musical direction by Eddie Schnecker. The show, which she has since performed in Gillette, Rocky Hill, Bridgewater, Warren, and Rochelle Park, NJ, is a celebration of music made famous by New Jersey’s most iconic musicians, from Frank and Nancy Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan to Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Jerome Kern, and Laura Benanti. In 2013, Jody performed a solo program of traditional pop standards at New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark for the St. Joseph’s Charity Ball, where prominent guests included WABC-TV anchor Lori Stokes and former U.S. Senator Robert Torricelli, among many others. She has appeared as a professional concert artist, recitalist, and entertainer throughout the tri-state area. As a soloist, she has performed at The West End, 440 Gallery (Park Slope), 180 Maiden Lane (Manhattan), the Westmount Country Club (Woodland Park, NJ), St. Paul’s Chapel (Columbia University), and many others. Jody graduated magna cum laude from Barnard College, Columbia University, where she won the Ethel Stone LeFrak Prize in Music for her senior recital of American Songbook literature by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Loesser, Sondheim, and others. She spent two seasons performing with the critically acclaimed NYC-based young artist program dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, where her roles included Papagena and Erste Knabe in Die Zauberfloete, for which Meche Kroop of The Opera Insider praised her “fine harmonizing.” Jody serves as a professional soprano soloist/section leader at Grace Church Brooklyn Heights and is also on the roster of Music for All Seasons in NJ.
Rev It Up! 5k/10k Festival and Expo
Sparta P.A.L. was started in the 1960's by Fred Gefken (former Sparta Police Chief), with the mission of Police Officers interacting with Sparta Youth in a positive way through athletics. The goal of the Sparta P.A.L. Basketball itself is to provide 4th-8th grade boys and girls a positive environment to learn and apply the principles of teamwork, discipline, dedication, and sportsmanship. It is all about the kids!
The funds raised at this event helped pay for the athletes' participation in summer and fall programs. These programs allow them to train toward competing on a higher level for those interested.
The Toys For Tots Train Stopped at Sparta Train Station!
The Sparta Train Station welcomed Santa and US Marines as they arrived on the Toys for Tots “Operation Toy Train” December 3rd 2016! The train load of donated toys arrived on schedule while children had a chance to enjoy festive family activities, food trucks, train displays, as well as a ‘Hoops for Troops’ contest sponsored by the Sparta PAL!
Children and their families eagerly lined up to get that special photo with Santa and his Elf. It was the inaugural year for the event at the Sparta Train Station. As the last stop for the train, which collects thousands of toys throughout the day, many volunteers helped load toys into trucks to distribute to kids this holiday season. Thanks to the generosity of our community the Sparta Station collected more than 600 toys! The event was such an overwhelming success it is already on the calendar for 2017!
Sparta Train Station plans on hosting the Toys For Tots Operation Toy Train for many years to come. Feel free to visit www.toysfortotsnj.com as well as www.facebook.com/OperationToyTrain to get up to date information on this exciting U.S. Marine Corps "Toys For Tots" Event.
